Palm Springs Scouted for Upcoming Feature Films

Palm Springs, CA. — There’s lots of talk about how film production has slowed over the last few years in the Golden State, but if the producers of several upcoming feature film projects have anything to say about it, Palm Springs will have a starring role.

Producers with DTMLA, and Las Vegas area screenwriter Matthew Sniffen, have been considering locations in the Palm Springs area for at least two of their feature film collaborations, The Cheat and Bombshell. Both films are currently in development with their plots being closely guarded.

DTMLA has several feature films, episodic series, and documentaries on their slate for development, with an action crime drama and a horror film being the most likely to land in the Coachella Valley.

A representative for DTMLA said, “We love the unique visuals Palm Springs has to offer, but also being so close to Los Angeles, where we plan to shoot the majority of our scenes, there are economic advantages to keeping things local.”

    About DTMLA:

DTMLA began operations as a talent management company in NYC in the late 1990’s before transitioning to Los Angeles for film & television production in 2001. They have collaborated with HBO,Universal Pictures, MTV, Paramount Pictures, Netflix, and many more, so bringing their extensive experience to the local area will continue a long tradition of Hollywood filmmakers who value the unique energy and scenic views that can only be found in Palm Springs.

    DTMLA Pivots to Production Services

Hollywood, CA. — DTMLA has announced a change to their traditional service model by scaling back it’s talent management department to focus primarily on it’s film & TV development and production arm.

Reps for DTMLA state that with the local industry in decline, it may seem counterintuitive to move efforts towards production, but “we’ve always been enamored by the City of Angels and Hollywood in particular, so it’s never been more important to film in LA than it is now. This is our love letter to Los Angeles.”

20th Anniversary of Doug Liman’s Lone Star

Hollywood, CA. — Lone Star was one of the most ambitious television projects that almost nobody in the industry has ever heard about.

Helmed by a visionary young writer and director Victor Buhler who would go on to produce HBO’s The Vow, and executive produced by Doug Liman with his company Hypnotic, it was intended to be the follow-up series to the wildly popular FOX TV teen angst & romance drama, The OC.

The pilot episode was shot around the LA area with locations including Pacific Palisades, The Cowboy palace in Chatsworth, and also on the OFX Studios backlot, it told the story of a young recent Texas transplant who worked for an affluent family who made heir money in the oil fields, and who would fall in love with the daughter of the disapproving patriarch.

It was a spectacular assemblage of top-tier Producers including Dave Bartis, Gene Klein, Trevor Chowning, Stephanie Rellis, and Gary Bryman, along with a seasoned crew and a cast of relative newcomers, that generated an on screen-presentation that was sure to become America’s next favorite primetime obsession.

Initial studio reactions and screenings were hugely positive and plans were made to continue with producing the series, but then the oft-cold reality of Hollywood came knocking.

No-one can really predict the fickle nature of network television executives, and as fate would have it Lone Star wasn’t picked up for a series run, although inexplicably FOX did run another series 5-years later with the same title but with a largely different storyline.

The list of Liman’s other projects are often cited when discussing his oeuvre, from his early heavy hitters GO and Swingers, to action packed big budget productions such as The Bourne Identity to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but this gem of a series that could have become an iconic piece of American television history seems lost to the masses.
